Bonus video of 801st TTS Airbats, including one of the few Japanese anime opening themes I can sing from memory:

I'm not sure whether to be impressed or horrified that it took Japan until the 80s to replace T-33 trainers with those, let alone their own T-1 which wikipedia says finally got the final boot in 2006. 48 years is a hell of a run for a low-stress frame like a strategic bomber, let alone something that gets flogged like a trainer.

That unconditional surrender and our peace treaty/military support agreement with Japan probably had a lot to do with them not being too concerned with getting new hardware. Anytime Japan gets new military capabilities, Korea and China raise hell about it, too.

Somewhat true, but trainers are small potatoes. Given that far more advanced things were in arsenal and ROK was ROKing F5s as early as '65, holding out T-33s in use until '81 is still... odd. They had Starfighters and Phantoms by well before that point. Of course, they apparently also clung to their F-86s until '82, so who knows.

Anime reuses aircraft from all over, and I like it. One example is Stratos 4. They use the BAC TSR2 as a high altitude interceptor.
